Primary Prevention
TAASA is dedicated to providing support for agencies and individuals working to end sexual violence in Texas and guidance regarding state-level sexual violence primary prevention efforts.
Our Approach
Sexual violence primary prevention is a strategy to challenge and eradicate the causes of sexual violence while promoting and strengthening those attitudes and norms that promote equity and non-violence. We encourage communities to move beyond awareness-raising and risk reduction. A primary prevention strategy asks us to address our attitudes and behaviors, how we interact with each other, and the norms of our communities, businesses, schools, and institutions in regards to violence.
We work to eradicate the blight of oppression that results in social inequalities and injustices, and that creates a culture in which sexual violence is more likely to happen. We identify and cultivate healthy connections between individuals, families, and neighbors. We support the development and growth of the efforts that promote violence-free communities in which all members are valued, celebrated, and afforded basic rights and dignity.

SAPCS-Federal RPE Grantees
Much of the work of the Prevention Team at TAASA is to support the efforts of programs receiving Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Services (SAPCS)-Federal Rape Prevention Education (RPE) funding through training, direct support, and materials development. The RPE program is funded by the Violence Against Women Act and is distributed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to each state and territory to implement primary prevention programming designed to stop sexual violence before it happens.
RPE funded programs can check out the RPE Grants page for further information on how TAASA supports the work of these programs and for resources specific to this grant.

Building Healthy Relationships and Communities Curriculum
TAASA’s Prevention Team has developed a sexual violence primary prevention curriculum that is intended to be used primarily with high school-aged youth, but that can be adapted for use with middle school and college-aged youth. The curriculum is based on both sound prevention theory and experience from implementing effective prevention programming. To inquire about the Building Healthy Relationships and Communities curriculum itself, or about available training and support for the curriculum, contact the Prevention Team at prevention@taasa.org.
