University Police from Across Texas Gather to Tackle the Issue of Campus Sexual Assault
Dallas, TX – On June 6 and 7, 2016 the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault is hosting the 4th Annual University Police Sexual Assault Training (UPSAT) at the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Dallas. The conference provides training on sexual assault response, trauma-informed investigations, confidentiality, and self-care for officers from colleges and universities throughout Texas. UPSAT was developed to help campus officers recognize and confront the prevalence of sexual violence, ensure that crimes of sexual violence are reported, that victims are not blamed, and school policy falls on the side of justice.
In the wake of the highly publicized rapes at Baylor University, as well as the countless others that go unreported on Texas campuses, we know that providing campus law enforcement with victim-centered training is essential. “As advocates in the field of anti-sexual violence, it’s hard not to notice the attention that campus sexual assault is getting. For us, it means a greater responsibility to ensure that the people to whom survivors report are equipped with training, resources, and the capacity to respond to survivor’s needs in accordance with campus policies.” said Rick Gipprich, Jr., TAASA’s Campus Sexual Assault Specialist.
This two day event will be attended by 150 university police officers from across Texas – many of whom are from Dallas and surrounding areas. Some topics that will be covered during UPSAT are:
- Responding to Campus Sexual Assaults: Law Enforcement, Title IX Administrators, and Victim Services
- Overcoming the Challenges in Campus Sexual Assault Investigations
- Sexual Assault Forensic Exams
UPSAT Conference – Monday, June 6 & Tuesday, June 7, 2016
Time: Day 1 – 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Day 2 – 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
