TAASA Statement on Supreme Court's Sex Offender Registry Decisions

AUSTIN (March 5, 2003) - "Today's Supreme Court decisions will allow Texas and other states to continue requiring sex offenders to register in public databases. While Megan's laws have the potential to help communities track dangerous predators, they are not perfect.

  • Recent studies revealed that states have lost thousands of offenders whose registry information is outdated or false.
  • In Texas, less than 20 percent of all sexual assaults are ever reported to law enforcement.
  • National statistics indicate that the typical child sex offender molests more than 100 children before he is ever caught.

"The Texas Sex Offender Registration Database is a tool parents can use to help keep their children safe. It is not a solution to the crisis of child victimization.

"Communities should renew their commitment to preventing sexual violence and encouraging survivors to report their abuse. Our children and families deserve nothing less."

    - Chris Lippincott, Communications Director
