Safety should be priority, not immigration status
Filed Under Uncategorized | By Melissa Heald | Comments Off
The Monitor reports that activists from four community groups filed a petition to force the U.S. Border Patrol to clarify its policy on checking immigration status in the event of an emergency hurricane evacuation. Earlier this year, the agency carried out a mock evacuation drill where they checked immigration status before letting people on the buses, and this triggered outrage from many community groups. Opponents argue that this measure would cause undocumented immigrants to stay in unsafe areas rather than risk deportation, putting countless lives at risk. The governor’s office has stated that no immigration status checks would occur during an evacuation, but since federal authorities have yet to confirm that, many people are still worried.
This is just another example of why authorities need to put people’s safety above immigration enforcement. An individual’s safety, no matter what their immigration status, should always be the top priority. Just as when undocumented people feel unable to call the police in domestic violence or sexual assault situations for fear of having their status checked, this policy is unacceptable.
