Sex Assault Prevention Funding Challenged by Adult Entertainment Industry
Filed Under Uncategorized | By Karen Amacker | Comments Off
The Texas Entertainment Association and others filed suit in Travis County Wednesday to prevent the collection of the Adult Entertainment Fee, passed into law by the 80th Legislature (HB1751). The fee would be assessed to live nude entertainment venues at a rate equal to $5 per patron. The funds generated by the fee (an estimated $80 million) will support programming to respond to and prevent sexual violence and to help finance health care for the uninsured. This measure passed both the Texas House and Senate with substantial bipartisan support.
The bill’s author, Rep. Ellen Cohen (D-Houston), sponsor Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) and our members worked diligently during the legislative session to secure this funding, and believe strongly in the merits of our case. The case is scheduled to be heard in Austin during the week of December 17.
