Human trafficking: Not a “major domestic issue”?
Filed Under Uncategorized | By Melissa Heald | Comments Off
An article about human trafficking ran in the Washington Post on September 23, discussing the lack of evidence supporting the idea that this crime is prevalent in the United States.
The evidence and testimony presented to Congress pointed to a problem overseas. But in the seven years since the law was passed, human trafficking has not become a major domestic issue, according to the government’s figures.
The administration has identified 1,362 victims of human trafficking brought into the United States since 2000, nowhere near the 50,000 a year the government had estimated. In addition, 148 federal cases have been brought nationwide, some by the Justice task forces, which are composed of prosecutors, agents from the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and local law enforcement officials in areas thought to be hubs of trafficking.
The problem with these assertions is that human trafficking is such a clandestine, underreported and underdetected crime. Traffickers often have intense psychological as well as physical control over their victims, which keeps them from seeking help. Additionally, law enforcement and other potential allies to trafficking victims are often un- or under-educated about the dynamics of trafficking and the warning signs. This means that many victims are overlooked or misclassified as criminals (as is often the case with women being forced to work as prostitutes) rather than victims. This article has been republished in several newspapers nationwide, perpetuating the myth that the United States doesn’t have a trafficking problem.
