Two years ago today, Upworthy wrote the article, “Boys Who Know How To Break Boxes Grow Into Men Who Respect Women” in a shout out to TAASA’s Break the Box campaign video. Today Upworthy continues to help spread support for awareness across social media platforms in an effort to highlight how gender stereotypes can negatively impact our youth and societal attitudes. Be sure to check out more about Break the Box on our Public Awareness Campaigns page.
Sexual violence isn’t just about rape or physical harassment. It begins when we hurt people through the words we use and attitudes we carry. Stereotypes of what it means to be a man or woman—for instance, boys are supposed to be strong and assertive and girls are supposed to be beautiful and accommodating—can limit our worth and potential, and create an unequal balance of power that perpetuates sexual violence. Share your story on how you “Break the Box” and pass this knowledge along.
